Three Lighting Mistakes That Make Pros Look Amateur

You can have the right message, the right credibility, and the right camera, and still look off. Nine times out of ten, it's the lighting. Here are the three mistakes we see most, and the fix for each.

1. Relying on overhead light

The ceiling light in your office is designed for paperwork, not faces. It casts hard shadows under the eyes and flattens everything else.

Fix: Turn it off. Put a single soft key light slightly above eye level and off to one side. That one change does more than any camera upgrade.

2. Sitting in front of a window

Backlight from a window throws your face into shadow and confuses the camera's exposure. You become a silhouette in your own video.

Fix: Face the window, or block it. Your strongest, softest light source should be in front of you, not behind.

3. One light, zero depth

A single flat light makes everything look like a passport photo. There's no separation between you and the background.

Fix: Add a subtle back or hair light, and put a little distance between you and the wall. Suddenly the shot has depth, and you look like you belong on a set.

Good lighting is invisible. People don't notice it's there; they just notice you look credible.
